Building a Virtual Community on Moodle

Have you ever considered using Course Management Systems (CMSs), such as Moodle, as a way to enhance your face-to-face classes? CMSs offer a variety of interactive activities (e.g. forums, chats, wikis, blogs, etc.) that support and stimulate both teacher-to-student and student-to-student discussions. Those interactive activities afford teacher and students opportunities to build a more motivating and fun environment for learning a second/foreign language. Through CMSs, online learning environments can help teacher and students build a community in which they feel comfortable not only about talking about assignments and class-related issues, but also about sharing their life experiences. This hands-on workshop is intended for all levels teachers who use or would like to use Moodle to construct a community inside and outside their ESL classroom.

Taking Charge of Classroom Assessment

Testing and assessment have always been problematic for the classroom instructor. Teacher made tests often do not fit the medium of instruction, and tests may not be exploited for what they can tell the instructor. In this workshop, we will look at what it means to assess effectively in the classroom, review basic concepts in assessment, and explore assessment techniques.
